Maleficent
Dark fairy and recurring antagonist
Story and background
Seeks control over worlds and ancient powers, repeatedly pursuing objects and secrets whose importance reaches back to the data-world era.
Events and connections in the series
At the same time, Maleficent had travelled backward in time after her defeat in a much later era. With a Darkness guiding her, she reached the lifeboat machinery beneath Daybreak Town and escaped toward her own age. Here Kingdom Hearts introduces one of its most important travel rules. These pods could displace hearts across time, but reaching the destination as a complete person required conditions such as a medium and someone who remembered the traveller. History would eventually provide those connections, sometimes without the traveller even understanding why.
The three travelled from world to world, locking keyholes to protect the hearts of those places. The Disney adventures mattered when they taught Sora what friendship, sacrifice, and temptation meant; their individual villain-of-the-week stories did not all change the ancient conspiracy. The core threat came from Maleficent and her allies, who searched for seven Princesses of Heart whose pure lights could open a path deeper into the darkness.
Riku wanted Kairi back, but fear and jealousy made him vulnerable. Maleficent suggested that Sora had replaced his old friends with Donald and Goofy. She offered Riku power and the promise of saving Kairi, drawing him away from the people he wanted to protect. When the friends met again, they were moving toward opposite sides of the same conflict.
Historical context
The supporting cast often links worlds and eras that Sora cannot yet understand. Their interventions matter because the wider Kingdom Hearts story unfolds across overlapping timelines, hidden memories and the manipulation of identity.
