Quadratum
World beyond familiar reality
Story and background
A modern city associated with Sora’s disappearance and Yozora. Riku recognizes it through dreams; the full nature of the place remains an open question.
Events and connections in the series
This is not a detached ancient subplot. Ventus will later become one of Sora's closest connections. Lauriam will later emerge in the present era under a very different name. And Strelitzia's loss will become relevant again when we reach Quadratum. To understand those later scenes, remember the underlying tragedy: Ventus was used as a vessel; Lauriam lost his sister; the person meant to lead the survivors was removed before the new world even began.
Kairi's memory journey brought another clue. In her own heart she confronted a memory of Master Xehanort, and a connection with Sora helped her survive. The memory spoke of a place beyond the reality she understood. Ansem the Wise and his colleagues considered the possibility of unreality: a world that would seem fictional from their side of existence. The Fairy Godmother then led Kairi and Riku to the Nameless Star, whose knowledge connected Riku's dreams to a place called Quadratum. Riku used that connection to begin the search in the unfamiliar city. Kairi chose to remain behind and train under Aqua, recognizing that she wanted to become stronger in her own right.
The story we can currently tell ends at the threshold of the Lost Master Arc. Sora is in Quadratum, an unfamiliar place that resembles a modern city rather than the worlds he knew. Riku has moved to find him. Donald and Goofy are searching for clues, and Mickey's investigation points back to Scala ad Caelum. A mysterious Strelitzia appears with Sora in the announced Kingdom Hearts Four material, directly reviving the significance of the girl murdered before the first Keyblade War. The Master of Masters also has a connection to this world of fiction, but his full objective is still not revealed.
