Realm of Darkness
Realm beyond the light
Story and background
Aqua becomes trapped here after sacrificing her route home to save Terra. The realm also plays a key role in closing the Door to Darkness at the end of the first game.
Events and connections in the series
Aqua tracked Terra to Radiant Garden. The person wearing his face had white hair and behaved like someone who had forgotten how to be himself. But when Aqua reached him, Master Xehanort's personality surfaced and attacked. She defeated the possessed Terra, only for Xehanort to turn his Keyblade on his own heart, further burying Terra's resistance and losing his memories. As the body sank into darkness, Aqua sacrificed her own armor and Keyblade to rescue him. She was pulled into the Realm of Darkness instead.
While these conspiracies unfolded, Aqua wandered through the Realm of Darkness. Time there did not behave as it did in the Realm of Light. She fought Heartless, crossed the fallen remnants of familiar worlds, and sometimes heard or felt echoes of the people she wanted to rescue. She had no clear path home. Her story, later shown in A Fragmentary Passage, extends through the period when Sora first takes up the Keyblade. We'll follow it alongside that era instead of incorrectly treating all of Aqua's journey as an event completed before Sora's adventure.
Riku, resisting Ansem's control, helped on the other side. King Mickey appeared with a Keyblade suited to the Realm of Darkness. Sora, Donald, and Goofy worked from the Realm of Light. Together they sealed the Door to Darkness, but Riku and Mickey remained beyond it. Kairi was restored to Destiny Islands as the worlds returned. Sora promised to find her again, then left with Donald and Goofy to search for the missing friends.
