Complete Kingdom Hearts lore / Scala ad Caelum

Location guide

Scala ad Caelum

Keyblade training city

Story and background

Ephemer’s legacy survives in the place where Xehanort and Eraqus train. Master Odin’s students are drawn into a tragedy, and the city later hosts the final confrontation of Kingdom Hearts III.

Events and connections in the series

Ephemer survived the destruction in the real world. In the generations that followed, he founded Scala ad Caelum on the remains of Daybreak Town, transforming a devastated age into a new home for Keyblade wielders. A statue would commemorate him, and the legacy of the ancient survivors would endure even when their names were forgotten. This also means that the old stories are not just myths. Scala ad Caelum, Xehanort's eventual home, literally grows from the ruins of the world's earliest disaster.

Lauriam will become Marluxia. Elrena will become Larxene. Ventus will be found far from the ancient period. Brain will awaken in a later Scala ad Caelum. Skuld's ultimate path remains more uncertain, and another girl found in Radiant Garden will later raise questions about the people scattered by time. These loose ends connect seemingly unrelated eras. We will encounter several of them again.

Many generations later, a child named Xehanort was born in Scala ad Caelum. He was a descendant of Ephemer, the founder of the city. A person in a blue robe took the infant away and raised him on the Destiny Islands. That caretaker carried the heart of the ancient Player, whose previous life had involved Ephemer and Skuld. The caretaker believed the child might be a special figure who could save the world from darkness. But believing someone is destined to save the world is not the same as knowing the future.
