The Organization operates from this artificial city and seeks an artificial Kingdom Hearts. The final confrontations of Kingdom Hearts II take place here.
Events and connections in the series
The Heartless calling itself Ansem would pursue the hearts of worlds, the Princesses of Heart, and access to a great dark Kingdom Hearts. He would tempt Riku, study Sora, and ultimately be confronted at the End of the World. Xemnas, meanwhile, formed Organization Thirteen, an alliance of powerful Nobodies who believed that gathering released hearts could give them complete identities again. They built a headquarters in the World That Never Was and prepared an artificial Kingdom Hearts in its sky.
Sora and his friends infiltrated the World That Never Was. Axel sacrificed himself to help Sora advance. Sora confronted a projection of Roxas, the part of his existence that had been denied the right to continue. Kairi and Riku were reunited with him, and Ansem the Wise tried to destroy Xemnas's artificial Kingdom Hearts. The attempt ended in an explosion that restored Riku's appearance and forced Ansem to face the harm caused by his experiments and revenge.
The enemy's scheme was revealed in the World That Never Was. Xehanort wanted thirteen vessels bearing pieces of his heart. Those thirteen seekers of darkness would confront seven guardians of light, creating clashes capable of forging the key-blade. The old Organization had been a recruitment ground for this new one. Sora, exhausted and trapped in sleep, was supposed to become the final vessel. Riku, Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and a newly returned Lea prevented the possession just in time. Yet they had not prevented Master Xehanort from returning.
