Xenoblade Chronicles 2

A huge action JRPG built around Driver/Blade pairings, auto-attacks that feed Arts and increasingly elaborate elemental combo chains across the beautiful Titans of Alrest.

Quick verdict

Should you play Xenoblade Chronicles 2?

Key strengths: Driver Combos and Blade elemental combos layer two separate chain systems that eventually interact, creating one of the deepest combat loops in the series once everything unlocks. Blades dramatically change weapons, roles and party builds, so acquiring and developing them meaningfully changes how each Driver can function.

Game-specific assessment

Pros & Considerations

Battles

Driver Combos and Blade elemental combos layer two separate chain systems that eventually interact, creating one of the deepest combat loops in the series once everything unlocks

Systems

Blades dramatically change weapons, roles and party builds, so acquiring and developing them meaningfully changes how each Driver can function

Exploration

Alrest's Titan regions are enormous, vertical and packed with hidden routes; Field Skills are a great idea because Blade abilities matter outside combat and can unlock shortcuts, treasure, secrets and environmental interactions

Graphics

Alrest is absolutely beautiful, with huge vistas, distinctive Titans and expressive anime-style character art; the presentation is especially impressive at up to 4K/60 on Switch 2

Characters

Rex, Pyra/Mythra, Nia and the wider cast are the best Xenoblade ensemble for me, with excellent chemistry over the long journey

Story

It delivers exactly what I want from a Xeno story: ambitious ideas, strong world-building, escalating revelations and a huge narrative payoff

Music

Area and battle themes are among Monolith Soft's strongest

◇Consider

Systems: I do not like the gacha-style Core Crystal system. Rare Blades being tied to random pulls can turn collecting specific characters, completing builds and covering useful Field Skills into RNG grind rather than deliberate progression. (A save editor can bypass the grind if you want a targeted workaround.)

Time commitment: Long — about 70 hours by the catalogue median

Mitigate the rough edges

Workarounds & fixes

Field Skill friction

The Switch 2 Edition removes the worst of the menu-swapping problem by letting Field Skill checks count relevant Blades you own without making you equip the exact skill team first. On the original release or emulation, save editing is an optional way to reduce the remaining Field Skill gating.

Core Crystal / Blade RNG

If random Blade pulls get in the way of the party or build you actually want, a save editor can adjust Blade and inventory data instead of turning the endgame into Core Crystal farming.

Useful on original Switch hardware or emulation; unnecessary for Switch 2 Edition
Platform: Switch emulation; experimental/partial real-hardware use

Removes several sources of blur and improves high-resolution output on compatible emulators. Real-hardware use is more limited/experimental; Switch 2 Edition already provides a native high-resolution presentation.
