Chosen by the wrong god
Mercenary L'Arc meets Ryfia, a Diva whose song protects him from a Feldragon attack. He later becomes a Child of Eesa aligned with the Imaginal Law, the belief that the present world should endure. His friend Alf becomes the champion of the opposing Real Law after Adele awakens as its Diva. The competing loyalties divide a close-knit group amid escalating imperial and religious conflict.
A world built on an older catastrophe
The parties gather Rogress powers while the spread of Hozone threatens entire populations. L'Arc learns that the supposedly divine conflict conceals the history of an earlier Divine Race, almost destroyed by the contamination that turned its members into Feldragons. The current Common Race emerged under the old Imaginal system, and restoring either Law as intended would doom one of the two races.
A third choice, and the cost of making it
L'Arc rejects both demanded sacrifices. Adele dies protecting Alf, Niko gives his life to prevent a devastating weapon from firing, and the group defeats the rulers attempting to exploit Eesa's machinery. L'Arc even faces companions whose loyalties have become irreconcilable before Alf finally agrees that neither inherited Law should dictate the future.
Ending explained: five hundred years
L'Arc and his companions defeat Eesa, revealing the supposed deity as a construct controlling the system. L'Arc takes over its function and begins a process that will cleanse the Hozone and allow both races to survive—but it requires five centuries of suspended existence. His friends leave messages across the generations. When he awakens, Ryfia has also waited in suspended sleep, and they step into the world that their choice preserved.
