The expedition and the disappearing people

Each year the Paintress writes a lower number on a distant monolith, and everyone in Lumière who reaches that age disappears in the Gommage. Gustave, Maelle, Lune and Sciel leave with Expedition 33 to stop the cycle. Their landing is a massacre; Gustave dies during the journey, while the mysterious Verso joins the survivors as they push toward the monolith and its supposed villain.

The truth of the Canvas

The world of Lumière exists inside a magical painting created by the Dessendre family. In reality, the family's son Verso died, and his grieving mother Aline withdrew into his Canvas. Her husband Renoir entered it to force her home, while their daughter Alicia became Maelle after losing her memories. The Paintress is Aline, trying to preserve a world whose inhabitants Renoir increasingly erases; the supposed heroic mission has misunderstood the conflict.

Maelle remembers, Verso chooses

Defeating the Paintress ejects Aline from the Canvas and allows the real Renoir to resume his attempt to erase it. Maelle eventually remembers that she is Alicia and gains the power to restore her companions. The Verso travelling with the expedition is a painted reflection, burdened by the remaining fragment of the real Verso's soul. He wants the Canvas ended; Maelle wants its living inhabitants protected.

Ending explained: two irreconcilable futures

If the player sides with Verso, he defeats Maelle and the Canvas is destroyed. The painted characters disappear and the real Dessendre family is forced to mourn Verso together. If the player sides with Maelle, she rebuilds Lumière and restores lost friends, even recreating a Verso who did not want that existence. Her health begins to fail because remaining in the Canvas consumes her. Neither outcome is described as a universally happy or canonical ending.
