The warning in the sky

Crevanille is raised among the Arten Schwart mercenaries on Lamplast Island. Noievarl is divided by military rivalries, but an older danger lies behind its wars: powerful Angels once devastated an advanced human civilisation and are feared to be returning. Crevanille's encounter with a seraph places him at the centre of the struggle to understand and resist them.

A continent whose friendships matter

As Crevanille crosses Noievarl, allegiances among states and former companions shift. The war creates situations where protecting ordinary people can conflict with an army's mission. Relationships, Vacations and Fate events are not cosmetic: particular allies may be saved, lost or developed differently according to what the player learns and chooses.

The ancient catastrophe and the Angelic Children

Crevanille learns that the ancient battle against Angels is inseparable from his own origins. He, Frayne and Bryntir were created as Angelic Children and carry the essence of the captured angel Uriel; this explains their extraordinary abilities and why the returning Angels recognise them. Their creator's attempt to manufacture a weapon against Angels makes the question of their freedom more personal than the surrounding national wars. The Angel Achiel and the surviving secrets of the old civilisation bring the struggle to its climax.

Ending explained: disappearance, return and routes

In the original story's conclusion, the struggle to end the threat and the use of magic apparently erases Crevanille, but he returns one year later. The separate Growlanser IV Return story explores that missing year. The PSP re-release retains the original route and adds modified and Dulkheim paths, with over forty possible epilogues and some dramatically different alliances and character fates. Those choices determine whom Crevanille is reunited with, and in darker branches even whether old comrades survive; there is no single ending representing every path.
