A loss and another world
Oliver loses his mother Allie after a river accident in Motorville. His tears bring a doll to life as Drippy, who explains that another world may offer the means to heal what seems irreversible. Oliver enters that magical world hoping to find a way to bring his mother back. He meets Esther and Swaine and learns to restore the stolen qualities of people whose hearts have been broken.
Shadar and the soul connection
A being called the Dark Djinn Shadar stands behind much of the spreading suffering. Oliver discovers a profound link between Shadar and himself as soulmates across worlds. The party learns that Shadar was once a soldier punished for an act of mercy: saving a girl who would grow up to be Alicia. Despair made him vulnerable to the White Witch. When he is defeated, Shadar severs his connection to Oliver so his death will not kill the boy too.
The White Witch and Pea
Shadar's defeat does not end the danger. The White Witch releases manna, corrupting the population of several cities. A mysterious little girl named Pea helps Oliver restore those affected. The enemy is eventually revealed as Cassiopeia, an ancient young queen manipulated and isolated by the Zodiarchs until grief and despair transformed her into the White Witch. Pea is bound up with her lost innocence.
Ending explained: grief cannot be undone
Oliver reaches the Ivory Tower, helps Cassiopeia recover her true self and confronts the Zodiarchs' final threat. Cassiopeia is saved rather than simply destroyed. Oliver ultimately accepts that his mother cannot simply be brought back by a magical shortcut and returns to Motorville changed by the people he helped. His journey reframes love for his mother as something he carries forward rather than a loss he can undo.
