The destruction of the City
Long before the main events of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, N destroys the original City and Matthew loses his grandfather Ghondor. His sister Na'el disappears amid the catastrophe. Matthew and the mysterious A search for survivors and find Nikol and Glimmer, two soldiers on opposite sides of the endless war who escape the Flame Clocks through Ouroboros power.
Old heroes, a new enemy
Shulk and Rex return, now older and tied to the history of both worlds. The party learns that Alpha, a transformed aspect of Alvis, has taken control of Na'el and intends to save a select future generation while leaving behind the world and people it judges obsolete. Matthew refuses a salvation that discards everyone else.
Origin and Na'el
The group confronts Alpha's attempts to seize Origin. Shulk and Rex explain that Klaus's experiment divided reality and that Origin was devised to preserve people when the worlds inevitably met. Matthew's confrontation with N exposes the terrible chain of grief, revenge and desperate protection behind the City's fall. Na'el's fate remains linked to Alpha until the final struggle.
Ending explained: the long vigil
Matthew and his allies defeat Alpha and free Na'el. Origin needs new stabilising figures in Alpha's absence, so Shulk, Rex and A enter it, relinquishing the lives they could have shared with the others. Matthew resolves to keep fighting for a future beyond Moebius, while the descendants of the old City carry its hopes forward. The reunion promised by the restoration of worlds is not yet realised; this is a bridge to Xenoblade 3's ending.
