The strongest feature is the way every apparently separate conflict gradually locks into a much older history. Fei's guilt about Lahan, the political rivalry between Aveh and Kislev, the secretive nation of Solaris, the Ethos, and the Gears each make sense in isolation before their meanings are radically recontextualized. The revelations are not simply bigger villains or higher stakes: they change what it means to be human in this world.
Fei's travels draw him into the Aveh–Kislev conflict and introduce Bart, heir to the Fatima line, and the struggle for Nisan. He is imprisoned in Kislev and participates in the Gear arena while working to escape. The expanding party discovers that apparently local wars are being manipulated by Gebler and powers far above the surface nations. Fei's unstable identity periodically produces overwhelming violence that neither he nor his friends can yet explain.
