Characters
Vivi, Zidane, Garnet and Steiner have some of the strongest individual arcs in the series
Graphics
The stylised proportions and richly painted pre-rendered environments have aged far better than more realistic early-3D approaches

Towns, optional Active Time Events, Chocobo Hot and Cold and hidden treasures make the world rewarding to explore

Best Way to Play
Fabled Cartridge recommended setup
Windows
Final Fantasy IX on PC with Memoria
The PC release with Memoria is the definitive Fabled Cartridge route because it keeps the original game intact while adding modern bug fixes, controller/UI/framerate options and access to Moguri, Alternate Fantasy, Echo-S 9 and a very large catalogue of community mods.
Pros
Excellent modern visual upgrade path without replacing the original art style
One of the strongest mod ecosystems of any classic JRPG
Memoria adds substantial quality-of-life and technical improvements before any optional content mods
Cons
Large mod combinations still require sensible load order and compatibility checking
Settings / notes
- Install current Memoria and use its built-in mod manager
- Use Moguri for the major visual/background upgrade
- Keep gameplay overhauls such as Alternate Fantasy optional so a first playthrough can remain close to vanilla
