The princess who wanted to escape

Zidane and the Tantalus troupe stage a performance in Alexandria to kidnap Princess Garnet, but she secretly wants to leave. With Vivi and the loyal knight Steiner, they escape Queen Brahne, whose armies and artificial Black Mages are invading neighbouring kingdoms. Behind the war stands Kuja, who supplies Brahne with weapons while pursuing a much older plan.

The price of Brahne's ambitions

Burmecia, Cleyra and Lindblum suffer as Brahne deploys powerful eidolons extracted from Garnet. Vivi finds other Black Mages who have gained free will and face a tragically short lifespan. Garnet learns of her origins among the summoners of Madain Sari, while Kuja turns on Brahne and she dies after trying to take his power for herself. Zidane's group pursues the source of the Mist and the strange designs surrounding their world.

Terra, Genomes and Kuja's fear

Garland reveals that the dying world Terra has been trying to replace the souls of Gaia with its own. Kuja and Zidane are Genomes, created as agents of this process; Kuja discovers his planned lifespan is finite and turns on his creator. Enraged by the idea of dying, he destroys Terra and attempts to annihilate the source of all life rather than face an ending alone.

Ending explained: choosing to live

At Memoria and the Crystal World, Zidane's party defeats Kuja and then Necron, a manifestation of death's pull toward nothingness. The party escapes, but Zidane stays to rescue Kuja. A year later Garnet rules Alexandria, the survivors rebuild, and Vivi's farewell words imply his death while celebrating the life he was able to share. During another Tantalus performance, Zidane appears alive and reunites with Garnet. The story's answer to mortality is the value of connections made before it.
