A stranger enters Spira

Tidus is torn away from Zanarkand by Sin and wakes in Spira, where people live under constant threat of the same monster. He joins Yuna, a summoner travelling with guardians toward Zanarkand to obtain the Final Aeon. Auron, Wakka, Lulu, Kimahri and Rikku have different reasons to protect her, but Tidus alone keeps questioning why the pilgrimage is accepted as inevitable.

The truth behind the Calm

The teachings of Yevon promise that a summoner's sacrifice can bring a temporary Calm. At Zanarkand, Yunalesca explains that the Final Aeon requires a guardian to be transformed into an aeon and ultimately become the next Sin. Jecht, Tidus's father, was the guardian who underwent that fate. Yuna refuses to perpetuate a system that saves people briefly by condemning her and another guardian to die.

Dream Zanarkand and the fayth

Tidus learns that he comes from a Zanarkand sustained by the dreams of the fayth, not from the ruins of the city as it exists in Spira. His life is bound to a summoning that will cease when the underlying cycle ends. Yu Yevon, once a summoner, has lost his humanity and perpetuates Sin through possession of successive aeons.

Ending explained: the Eternal Calm

The party enters Sin, confronts and defeats Jecht's aeon, and destroys Yu Yevon by calling and defeating the remaining aeons. Yuna sends the dead to the Farplane, including the unsent Auron. Freed from summoning, the fayth stop dreaming and Tidus fades as Yuna attempts to embrace him. Spira gains a future without Sin, and Yuna honours the cost of freedom in her public address. A brief post-credits image of Tidus swimming leaves a lingering possibility, not a reversal of the ending's sacrifice.
