An experiment at Thors
Rean Schwarzer enters Thors Military Academy as part of Class VII, a group deliberately mixing nobles and commoners. Their instructor Sara sends them on field studies across Erebonia, where local disputes reveal the Empire's increasingly strained political system. The conflicts among classmates become part of the education: they must learn to trust people raised with very different loyalties.
The Imperial Liberation Front
As Class VII travels, Chancellor Osborne's centralisation of power antagonises the Noble Alliance and a terrorist organisation called the Imperial Liberation Front. The students repeatedly encounter its agents while discovering that apparently separate crises belong to a wider struggle over the Empire's future.
The attack at Garrelia and the academy
The Liberation Front's leader C is ultimately revealed as Crow Armbrust, a senior academy student Rean has grown to trust. Crow's assassination attempt on Osborne and the subsequent political chaos ignite a full civil war. What appeared to be a story about making friendships across class barriers becomes a direct test of whether those bonds can survive the national fracture.
Ending explained: Valimar and the separation
Rean awakens the ancient Divine Knight Valimar beneath the academy, bringing a supernatural conflict into the war. He confronts Crow and the rival Divine Knight Ordine but loses. Valimar carries Rean away to safety, leaving his friends behind as Erebonia falls into civil war. The cliffhanger is intentional: Cold Steel II begins with Rean trying to find them again.
