Where this game fits

Birth by Sleep takes place around ten years before the original Kingdom Hearts. Terra, Ventus and Aqua begin as fellow pupils at the Land of Departure; their Master Eraqus and his old friend Xehanort pull the three toward a confrontation whose consequences echo across the franchise.

Ventus is broken to create Vanitas

Xehanort wanted a collision between pure light and pure darkness powerful enough to forge the key-blade. When Ventus resisted using his darkness as instructed, Xehanort ripped that darkness out of his heart. The result was Vanitas, an aggressive, separate being tied to Ventus. The extraction shattered Ventus's heart and nearly killed him. It also exposed the ancient Darkness that had followed Ventus across centuries. Vanitas is not simply a second ordinary human boy; his identity is entangled with the original Darkness.

Xehanort took the injured Ventus to the Destiny Islands, expecting him to fade. Instead, Ventus's fractured heart formed a connection with the heart of a very young Sora. This moment predates Sora's adventure by years, and it is foundational. Sora did not become important because he was secretly an heir to every special power in the universe. His extraordinary talent was his openness: he could give another hurting heart shelter. Ventus survived, and that connection would shape Sora's future in ways neither boy could then understand.

Xehanort saw a second chance to use Ventus. He brought him to Eraqus's Land of Departure, where Terra and Aqua were training. The three young wielders became friends, bound by trust and little Wayfinders Aqua made to symbolize their connection. For a brief time, Ventus had the home Xehanort had almost destroyed. But Xehanort had already arranged the pieces for his next attempt.

Birth by Sleep: three friends pulled apart

During Terra and Aqua's Mark of Mastery examination, Aqua passed and Terra failed. Eraqus feared Terra's darkness; Xehanort recognized how that shame could be exploited. Soon Xehanort disappeared, while creatures called the Unversed began invading other worlds. Terra was sent to investigate, Aqua was told to watch him, and Ventus departed when Vanitas suggested Terra was in danger. Their paths separated, though each believed they were doing the right thing.

Terra desperately wanted to be seen as worthy of mastery. He encountered villains and made disastrous choices, yet his deepest desire remained to protect his friends. Xehanort fed his insecurity, appearing to offer understanding where Eraqus offered suspicion. Aqua tried to fulfill her responsibilities without abandoning Terra or Ventus, but her surveillance made Terra feel betrayed. Ventus pursued them both while Vanitas tested his strength, deliberately driving him toward the final clash that Xehanort wanted.

The trio visited many worlds, but two encounters matter especially to the overarching saga. In Radiant Garden, Aqua met a little girl named Kairi and unwittingly passed on the possibility of wielding a Keyblade, later protecting her with a charm. On the Destiny Islands, Terra encountered young Riku and performed the ceremony of inheritance, intending Riku as a future Keyblade bearer. That event explains a major turn in the first Kingdom Hearts: the Keyblade originally meant for Riku ends up in Sora's hands when Riku chooses darkness.

Meanwhile, Vanitas produced the Unversed from his negative emotions and pushed Ventus toward confrontation. The boy learned that he and Vanitas were two halves of one wounded heart. And Xehanort's true objective emerged. Ventus and Vanitas would collide, and the resulting key-blade would grant access to Kingdom Hearts. The friend who wanted only to keep his family together had been made into a weapon.

The Keyblade Graveyard: the end of three lives as they knew them

Ventus returned to the Land of Departure and confronted Eraqus about Xehanort's plan. When Eraqus realized the boy could be used to create the key-blade, he resolved to kill Ventus rather than allow the disaster. Terra arrived and fought his own master to save his friend. Terra defeated Eraqus, but it was Xehanort who struck the fatal blow. Eraqus died in Terra's arms, and the home that had united the three apprentices was consumed. Later we learn that Eraqus's heart found refuge inside Terra. His death was not the end of his influence.

At the Keyblade Graveyard, all the betrayals converged. Terra confronted Xehanort. Ventus faced Vanitas. Aqua and Mickey fought to protect them. Xehanort had two ways to profit from this conflict. If the pure halves of Ventus's heart clashed, the key-blade could emerge. And if Terra surrendered completely to rage and darkness, his young body might become a new vessel for the aging Master. Xehanort deliberately let Terra defeat him, then displaced his own heart into Terra's body. Terra's will resisted so fiercely that his abandoned armor rose as the Lingering Will and fought the possessor. A body had been stolen, but its rightful owner had not surrendered.

At nearly the same time, Ventus and Vanitas fused in a confrontation that produced an incomplete key-blade. Inside his heart, Ventus rejected Vanitas and shattered the weapon. On the outside, Aqua helped defeat the possessed Ventus-Vanitas. The weapon's destruction saved the worlds from this attempt, but Ventus's heart was left damaged and lost. It sought shelter in Sora once more, while Ventus's body fell into a deep sleep. This is why the boy we later meet as Roxas resembles Ventus, even though Roxas and Ventus are different people with different hearts and histories.

Aqua carried Ventus back to the ruined Land of Departure. She used Eraqus's Keyblade, Master's Defender, to transform their home into Castle Oblivion, a place where outsiders could not easily reach the hidden sleeping chamber. She promised to return when she had rescued Terra. That promise would cost her more than a decade.

Aqua's sacrifice, and the scientist who was actually Xehanort

Aqua tracked Terra to Radiant Garden. The person wearing his face had white hair and behaved like someone who had forgotten how to be himself. But when Aqua reached him, Master Xehanort's personality surfaced and attacked. She defeated the possessed Terra, only for Xehanort to turn his Keyblade on his own heart, further burying Terra's resistance and losing his memories. As the body sank into darkness, Aqua sacrificed her own armor and Keyblade to rescue him. She was pulled into the Realm of Darkness instead.

The body that reached the Realm of Light was taken in by Ansem the Wise, the ruler and researcher of Radiant Garden. It remembered the name Xehanort and little else. Ansem made this amnesiac stranger his apprentice. Around him were other researchers, including Braig, whose eye injury and apparent loyalty concealed a much older story. We already know Braig was a later vessel of Luxu, just as Bragi had been. But to the people of Radiant Garden, he seemed like one more questionable associate.

The researchers studied the heart. Ansem the Wise initially sought understanding, but his apprentice continued dangerous experiments after being ordered to stop. Innocent people were treated as subjects. One teenage girl, identified only as Subject X, had memories of friends and a Keyblade-associated saying from the distant past. Young Lea and Isa met her while sneaking into the castle and wanted to free her. She disappeared before they could. Her identity has not been conclusively revealed in the released story, even though the clues strongly connect her to the ancient era.

Kairi, the little girl Aqua had once protected, also lived in Radiant Garden. Xehanort cast her away as part of his investigation into the Princesses of Heart and their connection to Keyblade wielders. She reached Destiny Islands, where she grew up beside Sora and Riku. That single act of exploitation accidentally created the friendship that would one day undo him.

The apprentice Xehanort betrayed his master, stole the name Ansem, and banished the real Ansem to darkness. Then, in experiments involving the release of hearts, Xehanort and other apprentices crossed a new threshold. When a heart is lost to darkness, a Heartless may be created; when a sufficiently strong person loses their heart, the empty body and soul may also continue as a Nobody. From Xehanort came two figures crucial to the saga: his Heartless, who called himself Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, and his Nobody, Xemnas. Both carried his plans forward by very different routes.

What happens next

The visible ending is not a restoration. Terra's body becomes a vessel for Xehanort, Ventus sleeps inside Castle Oblivion, and Aqua becomes stranded in the Realm of Darkness after rescuing Terra's body. The later games' central mysteries begin in this fracture.
