Where this game fits
This short episode follows Aqua through the Realm of Darkness after she sacrifices her escape to save Terra. It partly overlaps the period around the first game and leads toward Mickey's attempt to close the Door to Darkness.
Aqua beyond the Door to Darkness
Aqua has sacrificed her way back to the Realm of Light to save the body of Terra from Master Xehanort. With no obvious route home, she travels through fragments of worlds swallowed by darkness. Familiar structures have been warped into reflections of fear and regret, and time behaves unpredictably in this realm.
The pursuit of Terra becomes bound up with Aqua’s isolation. She hears and sees traces of people she misses, but cannot rely on every appearance. The phantom-like figures and Heartless encounters force her to face how much guilt she carries for failing to keep Terra and Ventus safe.
Mickey, travelling through the Realm of Darkness to find the Kingdom Key D needed to close the Door to Darkness, eventually encounters Aqua. Their paths connect to the climax of the first Kingdom Hearts game, when Sora closes the door from the outside and Mickey and Riku help from the other side.
Aqua stays behind to give Mickey and Riku a chance to escape. What looks from the first game like one triumphant sealed door has a second side: someone whose entire life was devoted to protecting her friends remains alone beyond it.
What happens next
Aqua's isolation and her connection to Mickey explain why the later Guardians of Light must seek her out. The episode ends by pointing toward her rescue rather than resolving the trauma of her long confinement.
