Where this game fits
The first Kingdom Hearts follows Sora, Riku and Kairi as the Heartless consume Destiny Islands. The three friends are separated; Sora gains the Keyblade and joins Donald and Goofy to search the worlds while Riku follows a far darker path.
Destiny Islands fall, and Sora takes the Keyblade
About ten years after the collapse of Terra, Aqua, and Ventus's friendship, Sora, Riku, and Kairi were growing up on Destiny Islands. They dreamed about worlds beyond the sea and planned to escape together on a homemade raft. They did not know that Riku had already been chosen for the Keyblade by Terra, or that Ventus's sleeping heart had found sanctuary in Sora. Nor did they understand that Kairi's journey to the islands had been caused by Xehanort's experiments.
The darkness reached Destiny Islands. Riku accepted its promise of escape, Kairi vanished, and the world was swallowed by Heartless. The Keyblade came to Sora in the crisis. He was scattered into the strange refuge of Traverse Town, where people displaced from destroyed worlds gathered. King Mickey had already gone searching for the cause of disappearing stars, leaving Donald and Goofy with instructions to find the Keyblade bearer. Their meeting with Sora created the central friendship of the series.
The three travelled from world to world, locking keyholes to protect the hearts of those places. The Disney adventures mattered when they taught Sora what friendship, sacrifice, and temptation meant; their individual villain-of-the-week stories did not all change the ancient conspiracy. The core threat came from Maleficent and her allies, who searched for seven Princesses of Heart whose pure lights could open a path deeper into the darkness.
Riku wanted Kairi back, but fear and jealousy made him vulnerable. Maleficent suggested that Sora had replaced his old friends with Donald and Goofy. She offered Riku power and the promise of saving Kairi, drawing him away from the people he wanted to protect. When the friends met again, they were moving toward opposite sides of the same conflict.
Hollow Bastion, Kairi's heart, and Sora's sacrifice
At Hollow Bastion, Riku claimed the Keyblade as its intended wielder. Donald and Goofy briefly followed their obligation to the weapon, leaving Sora apparently powerless. But the Keyblade returned when Sora's heart and his commitment to his friends proved stronger. Riku fled, and the enemy already waiting inside his darkness finally gained control. This was Ansem, Seeker of Darkness: Xehanort's Heartless, not the real Ansem the Wise.
Maleficent was defeated, but the larger danger remained. Ansem wanted to open the world's final door and reach Kingdom Hearts. Sora discovered that Kairi's lost heart had been sheltering inside his own since their island fell. He used a Keyblade that could release hearts to free her. The price was his own humanity. Sora became a small Shadow Heartless, and for a few moments seemed lost. Kairi recognized him and restored his human appearance through the power of her heart.
Something else had happened in that moment. Sora's empty body and soul became Roxas, a Nobody whom Xemnas found and recruited to Organization Thirteen. Naminé was also born from Kairi's heart leaving Sora's body under these unusual conditions. She was a Nobody with power over Sora's memories and the memories of people connected to him. Their existence was not an optional detail: the final return of both would depend on the lives that began with this sacrifice.
Roxas, newly named and nearly empty of memories, entered the Organization while Sora continued his journey. A girl called Xion would soon be introduced as another member. At this point Roxas and Xion were not merely waiting in storage for their eventual plot lines. Their daily lives had already begun during the closing stretch of Sora's first adventure. That overlap is why presenting all of Three Five Eight Days over Two as an event after Chain of Memories gives a misleading picture.
The Door to Darkness, and the first fragile victory
Sora, Donald, and Goofy followed Ansem to the End of the World, a place assembled from fragments of worlds that had succumbed to darkness. Ansem expected the power he sought to confirm his beliefs. Instead, the opening he reached answered Sora's insistence that even the deepest darkness could conceal light. Ansem was defeated, but closing the door required cooperation across the boundary between realms.
Riku, resisting Ansem's control, helped on the other side. King Mickey appeared with a Keyblade suited to the Realm of Darkness. Sora, Donald, and Goofy worked from the Realm of Light. Together they sealed the Door to Darkness, but Riku and Mickey remained beyond it. Kairi was restored to Destiny Islands as the worlds returned. Sora promised to find her again, then left with Donald and Goofy to search for the missing friends.
Meanwhile, Aqua was still trapped in the Realm of Darkness. During her wandering she encountered Mickey, and the events of A Fragmentary Passage eventually intersected with his effort to obtain the Kingdom Key D needed to shut the door. Aqua helped him but was separated and left behind. The people on the other side had won a great victory without understanding that a Keyblade Master who had protected their futures was still lost in the dark.
Xehanort's Heartless seemed gone. But Xemnas's Organization was intact. A young Nobody now carried the Keyblade and could release hearts for its project. And the three friends who began the saga were still divided: Sora wandered, Riku faced his own guilt, and Kairi waited. The next tragedy would be fought not over a world, but over memory itself.
What happens next
Sora, Donald and Goofy seal the Door to Darkness with Riku and Mickey on the other side, but Kairi has returned alone. The story ends with a hard-won victory and a promise to find the missing friends; those unresolved promises lead into Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II.
