Where this game fits
To prepare for Master Xehanort's return, Sora and Riku take the Mark of Mastery exam. They enter Sleeping Worlds, but their journeys diverge in ways neither initially understands. Young Xehanort, Ansem and Xemnas use the examination to draw Sora into a new Organization XIII.
Dream Drop Distance: Xehanort's real Organization
Yen Sid sent Sora and Riku back to the moment before Destiny Islands fell, so that they could enter the Sleeping Worlds and open the seven sleeping keyholes. Their examination was also a trap. A younger Xehanort appeared, with the seemingly defeated Ansem and Xemnas close behind him. Xehanort's Heartless had once travelled backward and contacted his young self, creating the conditions for versions of Xehanort from different moments to be gathered into one plan. Time travel in this story has restrictions: bodies, hearts, remembered destinations, and return to the proper timeline all matter. It is not unlimited power to rewrite any scene at will.
As Sora explored the dreams, he grew vulnerable to darkness. Riku's journey turned out to be inside Sora's sleeping dreams, where he was serving as a protective Dream Eater. The boy who once opened the islands to darkness was now the one shielding his friend from it. This reversal is one of the strongest resolutions to Riku's long arc. He was no longer seeking the Keyblade to prove himself superior. He would risk his heart to save Sora.
The enemy's scheme was revealed in the World That Never Was. Xehanort wanted thirteen vessels bearing pieces of his heart. Those thirteen seekers of darkness would confront seven guardians of light, creating clashes capable of forging the key-blade. The old Organization had been a recruitment ground for this new one. Sora, exhausted and trapped in sleep, was supposed to become the final vessel. Riku, Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and a newly returned Lea prevented the possession just in time. Yet they had not prevented Master Xehanort from returning.
Riku entered Sora's sleeping heart to save him, passing through further defenses and finding the research that Ansem the Wise had hidden within Sora. When the examination ended, Yen Sid recognized Riku as a Keyblade Master. Sora had been compromised and did not receive the same title. Characteristically, he celebrated Riku's success anyway. Lea had also begun training with a Keyblade. Kairi would join the guardians' preparation. The final battle could no longer be delayed forever.
What happens next
Riku ultimately protects Sora from the attempted possession and earns recognition as a Keyblade Master. The new Organization's real purpose is revealed: Xehanort intends to assemble thirteen darknesses for a confrontation with seven lights. The final pieces of the Dark Seeker Saga are now in motion.
