Where this game fits

After the events of Kingdom Hearts II, an unexplained message appears in Jiminy Cricket's journal. King Mickey creates a digitized version of the recorded worlds and asks a data version of Sora to investigate bugs that threaten the reconstruction.

A message in the journal, and the hearts still hurting

The immediate danger had passed, but King Mickey found a message in Jiminy Cricket's journal that nobody remembered writing. To investigate, Mickey and his friends recreated the journal as a data world, complete with a version of Sora who could explore corrupted memories. Maleficent and Pete intruded on the simulation, revealing how the possibility of data worlds fascinated Maleficent after her journey to ancient Daybreak Town. The puzzle ended with an important message from Naminé.

Sora carried the pain of people whose stories were still unresolved. Terra remained trapped inside the consequences of possession. Aqua was missing in the Realm of Darkness. Ventus slept without his heart. Roxas and Xion had sacrificed independent lives. Naminé herself was still waiting for restoration. The message did not say that Sora was responsible for causing every injury. It said that his connections made him capable of answering them.

At the same time, defeating both halves of Xehanort had opened another danger. When a person's Heartless and Nobody are destroyed, the original person can be recompleted. The disappearance of Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, and Xemnas meant that Master Xehanort could return. Yen Sid therefore summoned Sora and Riku to train for the threat that was no longer hypothetical. They would attempt the Mark of Mastery and learn the Power of Waking: the ability needed to reach and restore sleeping hearts.

What happens next

The journal's mystery leads to Naminé's message about people who remain connected to Sora and whose pain he may be able to help resolve. Re:coded's larger importance lies in pointing the characters toward the missing Guardians of Light, not in pretending that its data version of Sora replaces the original.
