Where this game fits

Dark Road follows the young Xehanort after his isolated childhood on Destiny Islands. At Scala ad Caelum he meets Eraqus and trains alongside other apprentices under Master Odin, but the disappearance of older students turns an investigation into a cascade of deaths.

The child taken to Destiny Islands

Many generations later, a child named Xehanort was born in Scala ad Caelum. He was a descendant of Ephemer, the founder of the city. A person in a blue robe took the infant away and raised him on the Destiny Islands. That caretaker carried the heart of the ancient Player, whose previous life had involved Ephemer and Skuld. The caretaker believed the child might be a special figure who could save the world from darkness. But believing someone is destined to save the world is not the same as knowing the future.

Xehanort grew up separated from the world of Keyblade wielders. He sensed people's hearts unusually strongly, and his dreams seemed filled with memories and friends he had never met. Those dreams drew on his connection to his caretaker and the ancient past. He wanted to escape the islands not because he was born evil, but because he felt that a larger world held the answer to the images troubling him. After the caretaker's death, he eventually reached Scala ad Caelum and began studying the Keyblade.

There he met Eraqus. The two became friends, rivals, and idealistic students who could argue about how to protect the worlds while sitting together over a board game called Alba and Ater. Eraqus trusted the light. Xehanort was fascinated by darkness, convinced that refusing to understand it left the world vulnerable. Neither boy knew how much grief lay ahead. And unknown to them, Luxu, still executing his centuries-long watch, had already worked his way into their story.

Dark Road: how Xehanort learned to fear the light

Xehanort and Eraqus studied under Master Odin alongside several classmates, including Bragi, Urd, Hermod, Vor, and Baldr. When seven more advanced students went missing while visiting other worlds, the younger group was sent to investigate. The disappearances were more than a school mystery. They exposed the boys to worlds still rebuilding after the ancient war, to the possibility that darkness hid inside seemingly ordinary people, and to a series of deaths that the adults could not undo.

Baldr's sister Hoder was among the missing. Her death and his unusually sensitive heart made him vulnerable to darkness. As the search unfolded, a surviving senior student, Vidar, hoped to gather powerful lights and summon Kingdom Hearts, believing such a force could cleanse the threat. Baldr, however, had become the greater danger. He turned on friends and upperclassmen alike, drew their hearts into his campaign, and finally confronted Xehanort and Eraqus. The two boys were forced to fight someone they had known as a friend. Baldr died, and many of their classmates were already gone.

Dark Road is important because it explains why the older Xehanort does not merely want strength. He has witnessed people killed by darkness, people manipulating light in the name of rescue, and leaders unable to save their students. He learns the wrong lesson from real suffering: that the existing order cannot be trusted, and that the world must be controlled at its foundation. Eraqus draws the opposite conclusion and clings ever more firmly to light. Their friendship remains, but their philosophies are separating.

There is one more revelation. Bragi, one of Xehanort's classmates, was a vessel for Luxu. His apparent disappearance did not mean the ancient observer was gone. Luxu was watching Xehanort's growth from close range, just as he would later watch events from inside Organization Thirteen. What looks like an isolated school tragedy is part of the much longer history of the Master's apprentices.

The Master of Masters meets the future villain

Later, while travelling between worlds, Xehanort encountered the Master of Masters. The mysterious teacher supplied a black coat that helped Xehanort move through darkness, and challenged him to look inside the hearts of people he met. Xehanort returned with a bleak assessment. Again and again he saw selfishness, fear, and the possibility of corruption. He came to believe that the worlds were flawed at their very roots. The Master listened, questioned him, and helped push him toward the path we now know as the Dark Seeker.

Years passed. Xehanort and Eraqus became Keyblade Masters, but they could not reconcile their views. The elders eventually quarrelled over the ancient Keyblade War and the power of Kingdom Hearts. Xehanort wanted to reach it and remake the order of existence. Eraqus believed opening that door would create a disaster beyond anyone's control. Their conflict grew so severe that Xehanort scarred Eraqus in a confrontation. The argument that began between two students had become a battle over who should decide the world's future.

To Xehanort, the legendary key-blade, offered the means to summon the true Kingdom Hearts. It was not an ordinary Keyblade. The ancient weapon and the confrontation between light and darkness were bound to the deepest mythology of their world. Xehanort began working out how to reproduce that confrontation and seize the power to start everything again.

Then he encountered a remarkable clue from his childhood dreams. A boy named Ventus, who had lived during the age of fairy tales, had arrived in the later era. Xehanort took him in as an apprentice. The boy could not remember the ancient war or the murder committed through him, but the darkness connected to his heart would soon give Xehanort a cruel opportunity.

What happens next

Dark Road does not excuse Xehanort's later crimes. It shows how real losses, fear of hidden darkness, and an increasingly authoritarian view of the world helped turn him toward the conclusions that would drive Birth by Sleep and the main saga.
