Where this game fits

Kingdom Hearts II begins not with Sora but with Roxas in a strange summer that cannot last. His identity is tied to Sora's restoration. When Sora wakes, he resumes the search for Riku and King Mickey, while Organization XIII pursues an artificial Kingdom Hearts by collecting hearts released through the Keyblade.

Kingdom Hearts II: the Organization's false promise

Sora woke without memory of Castle Oblivion, Roxas's friendship, or Xion's sacrifice. Donald and Goofy rejoined him, and the trio set out to find Riku, Kairi, and King Mickey while fighting Heartless and Organization Thirteen. Across the worlds, a strange contradiction emerged. Sora's heroism was being used against him. Every Heartless he destroyed with the Keyblade released a captured heart, and the Organization was collecting those hearts for the artificial Kingdom Hearts above its castle.

The Organization claimed that the Nobodies needed Kingdom Hearts to become whole. Xemnas used that promise to control its members. Meanwhile, Axel went rogue, desperate to recover Roxas by drawing Sora back into danger. Kairi was kidnapped and moved between competing factions. Riku helped from the shadows, unwilling to reveal the form he had assumed during his confrontation with Roxas.

At Hollow Bastion, Mickey revealed the extraordinary deception at the center of the earlier game. The enemy Sora knew as Ansem had been Xehanort's Heartless, an impostor using the name of a betrayed master. The genuine Ansem the Wise was the hidden figure DiZ, a researcher whose hunger for revenge had made him mistreat Roxas and others. The line from scientist to Heartless, from scientist to Nobody, was finally visible.

Sora and his friends infiltrated the World That Never Was. Axel sacrificed himself to help Sora advance. Sora confronted a projection of Roxas, the part of his existence that had been denied the right to continue. Kairi and Riku were reunited with him, and Ansem the Wise tried to destroy Xemnas's artificial Kingdom Hearts. The attempt ended in an explosion that restored Riku's appearance and forced Ansem to face the harm caused by his experiments and revenge.

Xemnas fought on, drawing strength from what remained of the artificial Kingdom Hearts. Sora and Riku defeated him together, finally fighting side by side instead of from opposite sides of a doorway. Roxas and Naminé appeared to Sora and Kairi and accepted their reunion with their original selves, though their desire for separate lives would not disappear from the story. Sora and Riku found a message from Kairi on the dark shore, and a door of light led them home. For a brief time, all three friends could finally stand together on Destiny Islands.

What happens next

The Organization's plan collapses in the World That Never Was. Roxas and Naminé reach an uneasy form of reunion through Sora and Kairi, and Riku returns from the darkness that changed his appearance. The Dark Seeker story appears settled until the later games expose deeper causes.
