Where this game fits

358/2 Days follows Roxas during much of the year in which Sora sleeps while Naminé restores his memories. It overlaps the aftermath of the first game and Chain of Memories rather than beginning entirely after them. Roxas works for Organization XIII, befriends Axel, and grows close to its mysterious fourteenth member, Xion.

Roxas, Axel, and Xion: the year Sora slept

While Sora's memory was being repaired, Roxas worked for Organization Thirteen. His Keyblade released hearts that the Organization collected for its artificial Kingdom Hearts. He spent his free hours eating sea-salt ice cream on the Twilight Town clock tower with Axel. Then Xion joined them. The three became friends despite living inside an organization built on lies.

Xion was not simply another Nobody. She was a replica created from data and memories, intended as insurance if Roxas or Sora stopped serving the Organization. Her apparent face and identity reflected connections inside Sora's memories, particularly his bond with Kairi. As Naminé worked to restore Sora, pieces that should have returned to him were instead entangled with Xion. Roxas began to experience Sora's past in dreams and flashes. The two friends' very existence became a threat to the restoration.

Riku and Naminé understood the cost: to wake Sora, Roxas and Xion would have to give back what they carried. But an abstract promise to restore someone else's memories meant little to three teenagers who had made a genuine life together. The Organization told its members that Nobodies could not have hearts, and yet the friendships, fear, anger, and grief on the clock tower clearly contradicted that claim. Their emotions were not counterfeit simply because their origins were unnatural.

Xion eventually learned the truth and chose to sacrifice herself rather than let the Organization use her against Roxas or Sora. She fought Roxas, forcing a conclusion neither wanted. When she disappeared, memories of her began to fade from those who had known her. Roxas was left with grief he could barely explain and anger toward the Organization that had treated his friend as replaceable. Wielding two Keyblades, he marched toward its headquarters.

Riku confronted Roxas to recover him for Sora's awakening. Roxas resisted fiercely, and Riku had to release the dark power he had been fighting, taking on Ansem's appearance to win. DiZ, the mysterious man helping Naminé, placed Roxas inside a simulated Twilight Town and gave him a quiet final week before merging him with Sora. Those days were gentle and false at once. Roxas discovered that his ordinary life had been arranged to make him disappear. His summer ended, and Sora woke.

What happens next

Xion's decision to disappear and Roxas's forced return to Sora make the opening of Kingdom Hearts II possible. The sea-salt ice-cream friendship is not a disposable detour: it is the reason the Organization's supposedly empty vessels matter as people.
