Where this game fits

After the first game's ending, Sora, Donald and Goofy enter Castle Oblivion, where every floor makes Sora's actual memories harder to preserve. Organization XIII members use Naminé's power to rewrite his attachments, creating a false childhood friend and a trap built from feelings he cannot trust.

Castle Oblivion: a friend invented from stolen memories

Sora, Donald, and Goofy came to Castle Oblivion, not knowing it was the altered Land of Departure where Ventus slept. Organization members led by Marluxia manipulated them into climbing the castle. Each floor drew on their memories, while those memories weakened. Naminé, compelled by the Organization, rewrote Sora's relationships so he believed she was his childhood friend and the person he needed to rescue.

Marluxia and Larxene hoped to turn Sora into a weapon they could use against the Organization's leadership. Their plan also involved a replica of Riku created as a counterfeit rival. Axel, assigned to observe the conspiracy, moved between loyalty, deception, and his own interests. Sora fought through a labyrinth in which his reasons for fighting were being rewritten as quickly as he formed them. He ultimately rejected Marluxia's control and chose to trust Naminé after learning what had been done to him.

Riku was climbing the same castle from below. His story ran in parallel. He confronted remnants of Ansem's influence, met the Riku Replica, and discovered that denying his darkness would not free him from it. Mickey helped him find a new path. Riku would not surrender to darkness, but neither would he pretend it had never been part of him. He chose the road to dawn.

At the top, Naminé offered Sora a choice. She could repair the damage to his original memories, but the process would make him forget the people and events of the castle. Sora entered a sleeping pod, hoping that, when he woke, he would be himself again. Naminé began an enormous act of reconstruction. Unfortunately, the memories she needed were also tangled with two living people outside the pod: Roxas and Xion.

What happens next

Naminé offers to restore Sora's original memories, a process requiring a long sleep. Riku's concurrent path leads him to confront what remains of Ansem's darkness without treating his own heart as irredeemable. The outcomes drive both 358/2 Days and the opening of Kingdom Hearts II.
