Abel
First Contact
Story and background
A young survivor of the Eldridge who encounters the Wave Existence, establishing the earliest known Contact and the emotional pattern later repeated by Fei and Elly.
Events and connections in the series
At the core of this history is the Wave Existence, a higher-dimensional being trapped through the Zohar/Deus system. A child aboard the Eldridge named Abel encounters this being and becomes the first Contact. The being responds to the boy's longing for his mother; the result becomes central to the existence of Elly, the recurring Antitype, and the pair's extraordinary connection.
The terrible premise is that human civilization on this world was not simply allowed to develop freely. Much of it was cultivated as a means of reconstructing the broken weapon. Abel and the later Contacts are the living contradiction to that design.
The next crucial recurrence unfolds during the conflict between Solaris and those who resist it. Elly is reborn as Sophia, the Holy Mother of Nisan; Abel's role is carried by Lacan, a painter who loves her but struggles with his own inadequacy. Krelian, a brilliant man drawn to Sophia, witnesses the suffering around them and becomes increasingly disillusioned with a god who appears indifferent.
Historical context
The Xenogears story spans millennia between the Eldridge catastrophe and Fei’s era. Solaris, the Contact and the Antitype connect personal tragedies to the attempted restoration of Deus. Characters may occupy very different places in that engineered history.
