Grahf / Lacan
Dark Grahf
Story and background
Lacan's grief after Sophia's death leads him toward the Zohar and a cycle of violence. Grahf moves between hosts, seeking power while remaining bound to the Contact's history.
Events and connections in the series
Sophia sacrifices herself during the war. Lacan's grief and rage leave him vulnerable to Miang's manipulation. Through contact with the Zohar and the pursuit of power, he becomes Grahf, a destructive presence who persists by moving between human hosts. Krelian, driven by the loss of Sophia and his own desire to overcome human suffering, turns toward methods that will eventually make him one of the story's most dangerous figures.
In the present era, the Contact is reborn as Fei Fong Wong. Fei's childhood is marked by horrific attempts to manipulate him and by the transformation of his mother Karen into a vessel for Miang. To survive intolerable trauma, Fei's mind develops separated identities, most notably the destructive Id and the everyday personality the player first meets. The mysterious Wiseman is connected to Fei's father, Khan, and the conflict surrounding Grahf.
Grahf is tied to Lacan's unresolved despair, while Id is a partition of Fei's wounded psyche. These are related but not interchangeable identities. Fei's reconciliation with his own divided self, and his confrontation with his father's history, are necessary steps toward using the power associated with the Contact without surrendering control to the past.
Historical context
The Xenogears story spans millennia between the Eldridge catastrophe and Fei’s era. Solaris, the Contact and the Antitype connect personal tragedies to the attempted restoration of Deus. Characters may occupy very different places in that engineered history.
