Krelian
Solaris scientist
Story and background
A former ally of Sophia whose grief drives a ruthless pursuit of transcendence. He helps use Solaris and Deus to reach beyond the world that took away someone he loved.
Krelian’s grief over Sophia’s death shapes his rejection of ordinary human life. He begins to seek an end to suffering at a cosmic rather than political level.
His knowledge and role within Solaris give that philosophy power over humanity, culminating in a plan connected to Deus.
Xenogears uses Krelian to ask whether transcendence without compassion can ever count as salvation.
Events and connections in the series
The next crucial recurrence unfolds during the conflict between Solaris and those who resist it. Elly is reborn as Sophia, the Holy Mother of Nisan; Abel's role is carried by Lacan, a painter who loves her but struggles with his own inadequacy. Krelian, a brilliant man drawn to Sophia, witnesses the suffering around them and becomes increasingly disillusioned with a god who appears indifferent.
Sophia sacrifices herself during the war. Lacan's grief and rage leave him vulnerable to Miang's manipulation. Through contact with the Zohar and the pursuit of power, he becomes Grahf, a destructive presence who persists by moving between human hosts. Krelian, driven by the loss of Sophia and his own desire to overcome human suffering, turns toward methods that will eventually make him one of the story's most dangerous figures.
With humanity prepared, the Gazel Ministry and Krelian push the Deus restoration scheme toward completion. The Gaetia Key alters human biology on an enormous scale, creating Wels and exposing the terrifying purpose concealed behind civilization's apparent progress. Krelian discards allies as they become expendable; Ramsus, constructed and manipulated for his assigned role, confronts the cruelty of that design.
Historical context
The Xenogears story spans millennia between the Eldridge catastrophe and Fei’s era. Solaris, the Contact and the Antitype connect personal tragedies to the attempted restoration of Deus. Characters may occupy very different places in that engineered history.
